The Maltings Community Theatre proudly presents The Rivals with central themes of love, marriage and money hilariously interwoven with Sheridan’s legendary characters.

With countless opportunities to satirize the manners of the town and country, Berwick is an ideal place to revive The Rivals. Listen carefully, and you may even catch the odd Northumbrian vowel or consonant, as our country boys “come into town” alongside Mrs Malaprop’s famously mangled lines.

First performanced in 1775, The Rivals was the first play for the 23 year-old Sheridan, heralding a huge new talent. An instant success, the play has remained popular ever since and was George Washington’s favourite play.
