As is usual with adaptations of well-loved novels, The Golden Compass has irritated a number of fans, but it would be almost impossible to include the density of plot and ideas in the book in an accessible 2 hour film. As it stands there is much to recommend it – performances are superb, particularly young Dakota Blue Richards in her terrific debut as Lyra, and the special effects are astonishing, especially the daemons and the ice bears.

In short, this is a hugely enjoyable, superbly acted and beautifully directed fantasy adventure that is genuinely exciting to watch.
