TAM WHITE's on-stage presence insists that we will enjoy ourselves. His gravelly
voice - it is no surprise to find that his trade is stone-masonry - commands
immediate attention, whether fronting a nine-piece big band (definitely a
hot, cooking band) or in perhaps a more restrained mode with an acoustic blues
trio.
His was the voice behind Robbie Coltrane's Big Jazza in the highly successful
BAFTA award-winning BBC TV series, Tutti Frutti. Close your eyes and you are
immediately in Chicago listening to hard-working, hard-living, hard-hitting
blues.
In more recent years he has had several TV and film roles including Braveheart,
starring and directed by Mel Gibson and in which Tam played the chief of Clan
MacGregor.
TAM has been around. From rock 'n roll with the renowned Boston Dexters around
the early club days of the 1960s in Edinburgh, to London from whence Scottish
Television lured him back north of the border with an offer of a series and
a 'monkey suit'. "Worst decision I ever made.", said the man. He
learned a lot in the intervening years!
In the early nineties TJ left to pursue a solo career and is now considered ‘one of the finest vocalists and R&B piano players on the jazz scene today.’ (Just Jazz) Playing music that ranges from Ray Charles and Dr John to Louis Armstrong and Louis Prima to Johnny Cash and BB King, it all has the TJ Johnson hallmark and it is this inimitable sound that won him a British Jazz Award nomination for Best Small Act 2005.
TJ & his Band play regular dates at jazz venues and festivals throughout
the UK and they are also popular in Europe. They have recorded 7 albums, but
the latest ‘The Heat of the Night’ (Lake Records) is generally
regarded as his best yet. It combines R&B with country blues and soulful
jazz and according to its fans ‘swings like hell’!
TJ is one of the UK's best rhythm & blues and jazz
piano players Just Jazz

Buena Vista Social Club was initially the name of an album put together by
the great instrumentalist Ry Cooder in order to save a form of music that
was on the brink of dying out. He visited Cuba and caught up with such venerable
musicians as Ibrahim Ferrer and Rubén González, and his old
friend Wim Wenders captured these meetings, the recording of the LP and the
subsequent concert tour on film. No-one could have guessed what a phenomenon
all of this would become, but thanks to Buena Vista Social Club, Ferrer, González
and Co. not only got their moment in the sun, their music found a global audience
which will ensure that the songs they created will live forever. A welcome
return for this cult classic.
