Peterloo

From acclaimed writer and director Mike Leigh (Mr Turner, Happy-Go-Lucky, Another Year) and starring Rory Kinnear (NT Live: Macbeth, Peny Dreadful, Spectre, The Imitation Game) alongside Maxine Peake (A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hamlet, The Falling, The Theory of Everything) - Peterloo is an epic portrayal of the events surrounding the infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre.

On 16 August 1819, a crowd of some 60,000 people gathered at St Peter's Field in Manchester for a peacful, pro-democracy rally demanding Parlimentary reform, an extension of voting rights and an outcry against the rising levels of poverty. However, in the attempt to arrest a leader of the meeting, the armed government millitias pannicked and charged upon the crowd, turning the peaceful event into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history.

Many protesters were killed and hundreds more injured and as the authorities feared the country was heading towards armed rebellion, the immediate effect of the massacre was a further crackdown on reform. However, the Peterloo Massacre was a defining moment in British democracy and ultimately played a significant role in the founding of The Guardian newspaper and the passage through Parliment of the Great Reform Act 13 years later.

"Peterloo succeeds on being an impactful recreation of a time and its injustices. Rory Kinnear and Maxine Peake stand out as respectively a proto-Hampstead liberal and pragmatic housewife struggling to put bread on the table." - Empire 4*

"richly intelligent, passionate movie" - The Guardian 5*
