Berwick Educational Association Lectures: Spirited: Women Artists from the Ingram Collection

The third and last lecture in a series of three lectures from Berwick Educational Association with Professor Maria Chester alongside Berwick Visual Arts Spirited exhibition on display at the Granary Gallery.

The works in the ‘Spirited’ exhibition celebrate the work of women artists in this the centenary year of the Representation of the People Act, which introduced the first votes for women. In previous lectures Prof Chester has looked at the barriers created by their Victorian heritage which faced courageous women artists in Glasgow in the earliest part of the 20th century, and then followed various women artists in their struggle for acceptance and recognition in the years between the wars.

In this lecture we will examine the fascinating lives and times of some of the twentieth century women artists whose works appear in this exhibition. Artists and sculptors such as Laura Knight, Barbara Hepworth, Elisabeth Frink and Bridget Riley eventually became part of the British art establishment and found international fame and fortune. The influential print maker, Sybil Andrews, is represented here, and the work of Lucy Jones (born 1951) will bring us into the 21st century.

Can we find common themes and concerns in the work of 20th century women artists? How did the struggle to succeed in a male dominated field affect the lives and creative choices of these women, and why did some succeed where many failed? We will also be introduced to their methods and styles of working, and be able to look at some of the works on display in detail.

Followed by a tour of the exhibition 1-2pm for an additional £3.
