A combination of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew and Cole Porter’s music and lyrics, Kiss Me Kate was an instant success. Its play-within-a-play format provides lots of opportunities for cast member’s on-stage lives to be complicated by what’s happening offstage. Filled with slapstick humour and classic songs, sung by the likes of Howard Keel, it’s no wonder this became Porter’s biggest hit.
