In the immediate aftermath of WW1 a young woman, bereft from losing her soldier fiance, is mystified by a stranger placing flowers at his grave. The stranger is a Frenchman and is treated with immediate suspicion by the small German community, stunned by its country's defeat. With feelings of guilt, loss and an inability to trust, the characters must find out whether connections with their loved one can bring them comfort or beckons trouble.

This is a true masterpiece of beautifully atmospheric post-war drama from a highly versatile director.
