Berwick Festival Opera: Byre Opera – The Turn of the Screw

Completing its sequence of Britten’s Chamber operas, following acclaimed productions of The Rape of Lucretia and Albert Herring, University of St Andrews’ in-house opera company once again joins forces with director Tania Holland Williams in The Turn of the Screw: a spine tingling adaption of the Henry James ghost story, where innocence falters and a malign shadow dominates. Ripe with malicious intent and an irresolute heroine, this is opera at its most gripping.

A chamber orchestra of leading Scottish musicians will be conducted by Michael Downes.

"Tania Holland Williams and her designer Gregor Donnolly have created a very elegant compact touring version... its Victorian gothic costuming, props and furnishings full of surprises, like a Vaudeville illusionist." - Herald Scotland - READ THE FULL REVIEW HERE.

"a hugely impressive piece of work for such a young group of performers. Under the leadership of Michael Downes, the company improves every year, and there wasn't a weakness in the cast. This, their third Britten chamber opera, was their best yet." - Opera Scotland - READ THE FULL REVIEW HERE.
