Lyrics by Tim Rice
Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber

Directed by Wendy Payn
Musical Director Neil Metcalfe

As their 2010 production of West Side Story proved, the talented young people of Maltings Youth Theatre aren’t a group to back down from a challenge. And so they take on another one of ‘the big ones’ of musical theatre – Jesus Chris Superstar.

Originally staged on Broadway in 1971, this opera follows the last week of Jesus’ life. Judas Iscariot is a major character movingly depicted as a tragic figure. Modern attitudes and sensibilities as well as contemporary slang pervade the lyrics, and ironic allusions to modern life are scattered throughout. The quality and depth of the award-winning music is top-notch in this moving, unique, and (for its time) groundbreaking musical.

If you’ve never seen this classic, here’s your chance!

Director Wendy Payn and her colleagues, Cheryl Stewart and Neil Metcalfe, can be incredibly proud of their young charges as every cast member pulled something extra out of the bag to make West Side Story an enthralling watch from start to finish - The Berwick Advertiser (West Side Story, 10/3/10)
