Indeed, the title of this play may be alarming, but that is perhaps the intention. Every monologue in this play relates to female genitalia, be it through sex, love, rape, menstruation, female genital mutilation, masturbation, birth, orgasm, the variety of names for the vagina, or simply as a physical aspect of the body.
This award-winning play is based on playwright Eve Ensler's interviews with over 200 women and is funny and heart-breaking. It has been published in 45 languages and performed in over 120 countries, often by a celebrity cast. Other productions of The Vagina Monologues have starred Jerry Hall, Glenn Close, Jane Fonda, Oprah Winfrey, Sharon Osbourne, Whoopi Goldberg and Kate Winslet, amongst others.
Regional theatre group The Tingling Wilmas are proud to present a perhaps slightly lesser-known cast who were nonetheless a sell-out at The Heart of Hawick in 2011. Do your heart, your soul and your conscience a favour by coming along!
The play is the cornerstone of V-Day, a global movement to raise awareness of -- and bring an end to -- violence against women and girls. Each year V-Day focuses on a specific group of women in the world who are resisting violence with courage. The 2012 Spotlight Campaign is on the women and girls of Haiti: 10% of profits from these performances will go to this campaign, with the remaining 90% going to a (yet to be named) local organisation doing a similar work.
