Maltings successful in Arts Council Portfolio programme application

Wed 30 Mar

316% increase in Arts Council funding for Maltings

Arts Council England today announced that The Maltings Theatre & Cinema has been successful in its application  for inclusion in the new National portfolio funding programme, with its annual funding increased by a staggering 316% from 2012.

In an email from Arts Council England received at 7.30am this morning, the theatre were informed that ACE have decided to award the full amount of funding requested.

The Maltings currently receives £42,144 in annual funding from ACE.

As a result of their successful application, the theatre will receive £175,200 in 2012-13, £179,405 in 2013 - 14 and £184,069 in 2014 - 15.

This represents an increase in ACE funding of 316% in the first year.

This is a striking vote of confidence in The Maltings track record of delivery over the last two years and in the quality of the theatre's vision for the arts for our community in the future.

Dr Miles Gregory, Chief Executive of the theatre, said 'We are obviously pleased that Arts Council England recognise the significant improvements that we have delivered over the last two years. We realise though that other organisations in our region may not have been successful, and there will be a need for arts organisations to work together to minimise the impact of cuts to arts budgets across Northumberland.

'The Maltings will have much work to do over the coming years, and there will be serious challenges ahead as our organisation grows considerably. But today's news is a wonderful result for The Maltings and the communities we serve.'

'I would like to pay tribute to the Board, staff and volunteers at The Maltings, who have worked so hard over the last few years to transform the way The Maltings operates. We can be justly proud of our theatre in this town.'

Mr Maurice Ward, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, said 'The Maltings is a vital asset to Berwick and north Northumberland. With the Arts Council backing us in this way, our future is incredibly bright. This is a very significant day in the history of our theatre and for the future of arts and culture in our region.'

The Arts Council funding will support the Maltings core programme, a social enterprise education programme in partnership with Think Make Grow, delivery of the current Berwick Gymnasium Fellowship programme, and the delivery of a new visual arts programme in spaces across the town including an associated education and outreach programme.

The news comes as The Maltings prepares to open its new £93,000 Henry Travers Studio. The new studio, which will be used for the first time on Thursday 31 March for a production of short plays by Chekhov, has been completed on budget - and a day earlier than expected.
