Cecilia Stenbom is first artist in residence for Berwick Visual Arts

Sat 01 Dec

SWEDISH BORN, NEWCASTLE-BASED ARTIST SELECTED FROM OVER 70 APPLICATIONS FOR NEW BERWICK VISUAL ARTS INITIATIVE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BERWICK FILM & MEDIA ARTS FESTIVAL

Berwick Visual Arts in partnership with the Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival is pleased to announce Cecilia Stenbom as its first artist in residence. The residency provides the opportunity for an artist working with the moving image to respond to Berwick-upon-Tweed and produce new work to be premiered during the annual festival in late September 2013.

James Lowther, Head of Berwick Visual Arts commented, “This first residency demonstrates the international reach of our work – we received over 70 applications from as far a field as Australia, China, India and Russia. We excited to appoint Cecilia and provide a unique opportunity for her to develop her practice”.

Cecilia is originally from Sweden and has been based in Iceland, Finland and Scotland before moving to England in 2005. Her work is concerned with notions of identity in a consumer driven and information rich culture, and how even the most mundane and seemingly unassuming moments are affected by the abundance of information surrounding us. She examines our anxieties and desires, reinterpreting scenarios within entertainment, mass media, retail and domestic life. She works across a variety of media including video and film, installation, drawing and painting.

Of appointment Cecilia said, “I am really pleased to be selected and I am looking forward to making new work in an exciting location. Berwick is a rich environment to draw from that engages from both a political and physical landscape”.

The residency opportunity is supported by Arts Council England. Regional Director, Alison Clark-Jenkins, commented, “It’s been a pleasure to see Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival get bigger and better each year. Berwick Visual Arts has done a fantastic job of bringing interesting and exciting work to the Northumberland town, and announcing Cecilia Stenbom as their first artist in residence is great news. I hope this is a fruitful opportunity for Cecilia in developing her practice, and for the festival in producing new work in the region for 2013.”

Cecilia will take up her post in early 2013 and there will be opportunities to meet with her and learn more about the work she plans to develop whilst resident in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Melanie Iredale, Director of the Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival added, “We’re delighted to be working with Berwick Visual Arts as a partner on this residency, and to welcome Cecilia to Berwick. We’re excited about the work she will produce, in collaboration with the people of Berwick, and in response to the festival’s 2013 theme, North by Northeast”.

Cecilia’s recent projects include: Happy Fashion, VIAINDUSTRIAE (Perugia, Italy), NADA Art Fair (Miami USA), Northern Lights, Mercer Art Gallery (Harrogate, UK), Moving Image Art Fair (New York, USA), Homeland Security, Workplace Gallery (Gateshead, UK), 13th Media Art Biennale, (Wroclaw, Poland) and forthcoming solo exhibition Nobody gets out of here alive, Kaapelin Galleria (Helsinki, Finland). Cecilia is represented by Workplace Gallery, Gateshead.

Berwick Visual Arts will open applications for its second residency opportunity in early 2013.
