Ruth Bolam secures year-long experience working in performing arts, visual arts and cinema in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

The Maltings Theatre & Cinema in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, is delighted to announce the appointment of 17 year-old Ruth Bolam for a new, full-time apprenticeship opportunity.

The paid 12 month post will provide an important step up on the ladder for a career in the arts and culture sector through hands on experience working in all aspects of the very busy Berwick organisation.

During the first half of her apprenticeship, Ruth will be assigned duties across a diverse range of areas, including Front of House (Box Office), Technical, Visual Arts, Marketing and Administration. In the second half, she will focus on one particular area of work of her choosing.

Ruth recently completed her BTEC Interactive Media course at Gateshead College. Her previous work experience includes digital marketing at Infrastrate Ltd., office junior work for Tyne Tees Model Placement, and helping to run the pop-up art store Made In Newcastle (where she also sold some of her original artwork).

She is passionate about Photography, Graphic Design, Art and Animation. Her dream would be to intern at Pixar. Who knows? Her year-long apprenticeship at The Maltings could be an important first step in making that dream come true!

CEO & Artistic Director, Matthew Rooke said, “I am absolutely delighted that The Maltings is able to provide a vital career opportunity for a young person in our region to advance their dream of a career in the arts. Ruth is a very bright, charming and enthusiastic person who will no doubt flourish under the mentorship of the terrific team here at The Maltings”.

Ruth’s appointment is one of a number of apprenticeships and internships being offered across the county as part of a consortium of arts and cultural venues, made possible with support from Northumberland County Council along with the Creative Employment Programme, a £15m fund to support the creation of traineeships, formal apprenticeship and paid internship opportunities in England for young unemployed people wishing to pursue a career in the arts and cultural sector. Similar opportunities are being offered at The Alnwick Playhouse in Alnwick, the Queens Hall Arts Centre in Hexham, and The Woodhorn Museum in Ashington.
