On Chesil Beach

Adapted from Ian McEwan's 2007 bestselling novella, On Chesil Beach centres on a young couple in the summer of 1962.

Graduate students Edward Mayhew and Florence Ponting have just been married and are spending their honeymoon in a small hotel at Chesil Beach. Despite coming from drastically different backgrounds and upbringings the pair had an idyllic courtship - however the relationship implodes on the eve of their marriage.

We witness the moments leading up to the pairs pivotal wedding night through a series of flashbacks; from family dynamics that defined their very different approaches, to the moment they both first met.

"...a tender and valuable film, well acted, with a shrewd eye for how naive you can be in your early 20s..." - The Guardian

Following Atonement in 2007, Saoirse Ronan plays her second role in a film adapted from a Ian McEwan novel, this time working with a screenplay adapted by the author himself - the first time he's ever created a screenplay for his own work.
