Residencies with Newcastle University’s Centre for Rural Economy and Institute for Creative Arts Practice

Our most recent artist in residence with Newcastle University was photographer Joanne Coates (2020-21) who researched gender bias in agriculture by documenting the working lives of women farmers based in the Northumberland and the North East of England to understand the challenges they face within this sector.

Visual artists GÂST (2017-18) explored the material and cultural identity of three venues of historic and community importance in Berwick-upon-Tweed, considering what it means to historicise these sites through echoes of collective memory.

Filmmaker and animator Gemma Burditt (2016-17) spent six months exploring dairy farming in Northumberland and created a four metre long animation exploring how dairy businesses have evolved and responded to changing markers and advances in technology.

Other artists in residence included Sander Van Raemdonck (2015-16), Piotr Piasta (2014-15) and Stephanie Misa (2013-14)
