Before Berwick’s Curfew Run Gets Underway, Discover the Story Behind the Tradition
If you’re heading to this year’s Curfew Run, why not start your evening by discovering the story behind one of Berwick’s most unique traditions?
On Wednesday 8 July, visitors are invited to drop into the Maltings Cinema at Berwick Barracks between 6.30pm and 7.30pm for a free screening of a newly commissioned short film celebrating the history, heritage and community spirit of the Curfew Run.
Running for just four minutes, the film brings together stunning footage of Berwick’s Elizabethan Walls with archive footage from Curfew Runs over the years, celebrating an event that has become one of the town’s most loved annual traditions.
Commissioned by Create Berwick and brought together by Xennon Easton, the film also features an original score composed by Xennon, with Northumbrian piper Paul Knox providing a soundtrack inspired by Berwick’s rich heritage.
The film will play continuously on a loop throughout the hour, so there’s no need to arrive at a specific time—simply drop in before making your way outside to enjoy the evening’s races.
A Tradition Like No Other
Since 1996, the Curfew Run has challenged participants to complete a circuit of Berwick’s historic Elizabethan Walls before the Curfew Bells finish tolling. Combining local history with a unique sporting challenge, it has become one of the UK’s most distinctive community races.
This year’s Curfew Fun Run begins at 7.30pm, followed by the main Curfew Run at 8pm.

Whether you’re taking part, supporting friends and family, or simply soaking up the atmosphere, the Maltings Cinema is the perfect place to begin your evening.
Refreshments will be available throughout the event, and visitors are welcome to use the cinema as a meeting point before heading outside for the race.
