A further update from Scott Sherrard, Chair of The Maltings (Berwick) Trust

I know from the number of times I’m asked when walking around Berwick that many of you are wondering where things stand with our planning application for the new Maltings. We now have a definite answer – it will be considered by NCC’s Strategic Planning Committee on 5 August (its first meeting since the May council elections).

Life beyond Eastern Lane continues, and it’s been great to see so many of you at the Granary Gallery for the fabulous Cedric Morris exhibition and others enjoying films and live broadcasts at our very comfortable new cinema at the Barracks – a must for film lovers in Berwick, so please come and try it for yourself. Your continuing and much needed support is treasured by our whole team.

Our ambitions for what the new building’s facilities and expanded programme of cinema, live events, community, family friendly and  creative learning activities can do for the town remain undiminished. We must not allow delay to disrupt momentum. It is vital that our funders are reassured and excited by the evident support for their huge contribution to Berwick’s future.

With that in mind, we are very grateful for the fulsome nature of the statement released this week by our Town Council:

Berwick-upon-Tweed Town Council is pleased to express its support for the proposed development of The Maltings, in line with the recent positive vote delivered during our planning consultation process.

The Council strongly believes this project should proceed, and offers its support on the following grounds:

Cultural Advancement: The development represents a significant cultural opportunity for local residents. By creating a truly world-class facility, The Maltings will be able to expand its offering of events, exhibitions, and performances, bringing high-quality arts and culture to our community and helping Berwick realise its cultural potential.

Economic Regeneration: The project serves as a critical catalyst for the economic renewal of the town centre. It will act as a cornerstone for further development across Berwick, encouraging investment and revitalisation throughout the area.

High Street Revitalisation: By increasing footfall from visitors drawn to the town through an enhanced Maltings events calendar, the development will help support local businesses and services across the high street, fostering a more vibrant and economically resilient town centre.

Securing the Future: The current Maltings building cannot accommodate the scale of growth and ambition required to meet future needs. The proposed development provides a sustainable and forward-looking solution that secures the long-term future of the organisation and supports Berwick’s cultural and economic aspirations.

Berwick-upon-Tweed Town Council looks forward to seeing this vital project progress and is committed to supporting the next steps of its delivery.

Support like this makes a difference. If you have not yet done so, may I urge you to add your support on the Planning Portal. Just follow this link.
