About Us

The Maltings is a registered charity and multi-venue cultural organisation delivering a year-round programme of film, visual arts and creative learning across Berwick, created with and for the town and its communities.

Our programme includes the latest film releases and special event screenings, a vibrant visual arts exhibition programme, live performances and pop-up events across the town, and a wide range of creative learning opportunities for children, young people and schools.

We work with artists and partners to deliver youth theatre, artist-led workshops, talks and residencies, creating welcoming spaces for people to come together, take part and experience culture in ways that feel open, inclusive and relevant to their lives.

Our artist residencies and commissions are part of the Living Barracks Berwick Shines engagement programme in locations across Berwick.

Maltings Cinema at Berwick Barracks

Maltings Cinema at Berwick Barracks is a comfortable, intimate 96-seat cinema space offering a relaxed way to enjoy great film and event screenings in the heart of Berwick.

Our programme includes the latest film releases, special event broadcasts and one-off screenings, all carefully curated as part of The Maltings’ wider year-round arts and culture programme. You can explore what’s coming up and book tickets via the link here.

The cinema opened in October 2024, launching with two live events delivered in partnership with Berwick Literary Festival, and has quickly become a welcoming place to watch film together.

Housed within the historic Barracks Mob Store, the building dates back to the early 20th century and was once used to store military equipment — now reimagined as a shared cultural space for the town.

Exhibitions at our galleries

Our exhibition programme invites everyone to spend time with ambitious, inspiring visual art, presented through a year-round programme of exhibitions, artist residencies, events and creative activity for schools and communities.

We are proud to champion some of the most celebrated British and Scottish artists alongside contemporary voices, with exhibitions that connect art, place and people. Our programme often highlights artists who have been inspired by Northumberland and the Scottish Borders, offering fresh perspectives on the landscapes, histories and stories that shape this region.

We work across two gallery spaces: the Granary Gallery, which hosts our year-round exhibition programme, and The Gymnasium, which is currently closed for refurbishment and will reopen in 2027 as part of the next chapter for The Maltings.

Recent exhibitions have included Lowry and the Sea, Anne Redpath and Her Circle, Turner: Northern Exposure and The Glasgow Boys & Girls.

Alongside our exhibitions, our residency programme supports two mid-career artists each year to live and work in Berwick, giving them time, space and support to develop new work while engaging with the town and its communities.

Play. Discover. Create with our Creative Workshops

Maltings at Hide Hill is our Berwick town-centre home for creative workshops, events and activities – a welcoming space for families, young people and people of all ages.

The space brings artists and communities together to explore creativity, heritage and ideas – offering hands-on experiences that are open, informal and accessible.

This creative space allows us to bring creativity into the heart of the town, while we grow our engagement work and continue to develop our future home on Eastern Lane.

Maltings at Hide Hill is supported by Create Berwick and hosts artist-led heritage and creative activity as part of the Living Barracks project.

This work is made possible with funding from the Cultural Development Fund, a DCMS fund administered by Arts Council England, and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and is delivered in partnership with:
