Berwick Barracks Artist Studio Bursaries

These bursaries offer an opportunity for artists at any point in their career to benefit from a dedicated working space to support the development of their creative practice.

The Living Barracks is an ambitious multi-partner project, that will deliver a thriving cultural hub and visitor destination at Berwick Barracks in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Over the next two years the Barracks will become a striking new home for the town’s archives and collections, and a venue for contemporary visual art and public events.

The site already is home to five artists who are based in bespoke artist studios on the ground floor of G Block, managed by the Maltings (Berwick) Trust.

As part of our development of the studios we are now offering three bursaries for artists based in North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders.

Through the provision of a studio for one month, these bursaries offer an opportunity for artists at any point in their career to benefit from a dedicated working space to support the development of their creative practice.

Additionally, we are offering a bursary in partnership with Berwick Open Studios for an artist who may not be able to participate in the event (due to not having a studio or exhibition display space) the opportunity to do so.

Berwick Open Studios 2026 is funded by Create Berwick, The North East Mayoral Strategic Authority and Northumberland County Council.

More details about Berwick Open Studios can be found here.
