A presentation by Dr Joanna Meacock, Curator (British Art), Glasgow Museums.
Maggie Hamilton (1867–1952), a talented embroiderer and painter of flowers and still-life’s, presents a fascinating case study of a woman artist at the turn of the century, who worked and exhibited prodigiously across the fine and decorative arts, and yet has now fallen into obscurity.
Sister of Glasgow Boys painter James Whitelaw Hamilton and wife of the architect A. N. Paterson (the younger brother of Glasgow Boy James Paterson), she is little known as an artist in her own right, eclipsed by her brother, husband, brother-in-law and other Glasgow Boys.
In this presentation Jo Meacock will examine Maggie Hamilton’s artistic legacy and the extent to which she benefitted from or was hindered by her more famous male family members and friends.
The event will consist of a 50-minute recorded presentation followed a live Q&A with Jo Meacock and will be delivered via Zoom and a link will be sent to you the day presentation.

The event is presented as part of The Glasgow Boys & Girls exhibition currently at The Granary Gallery. More information HERE.
