Our Freedom: Then and Now

Led by Future Arts Centres, 60 arts centres and libraries will work with commissioned artists and local communities to create special cultural events, exhibitions and performances that are meaningful to people living in these places and across the UK. ‘Freedom Road’, a new poem by the poet Simon Armitage has been the starting point for this creative journey

The Maltings has been working throughout the summer of 2025 on a visual arts project with Berwick Youth Project exploring ideas of freedom and what that means to young people in 2025 and how that has changed in the 80 years since World War II.

In collaboration with Berwick Youth Project, we have commissioned the artist April Key to create a new neon artwork shaped by the ideas of freedom explored by the young people through a series of artist led visual arts workshops and from some research in the archive of the Kings Own Scottish Borderers Museum and the Berwick town archives.

Look out for details of the launch of this new contemporary artwork in the run up to Remembrance Sunday in November 2025 and an accompanying photography exhibition showcasing the work of Berwick Youth Project as well as some community events to celebrate their work.

The programme is delivered in partnership with Libraries Connected and Open Eye Gallery, supported using public funding by UK Government through Arts Council England.
