Caroline Jupp: The Sci-Fi Scriptorium

Sci-Fi Scriptorium stamp

The Sci-fi Scriptorium is a space for writing and imagining in the town centre of Berwick, hosting workshops and inviting the public in to explore speculative forms of writing inspired by objects and stories from the KOSB collection and Record Office. The project is inspired by the Lindisfarne Scriptorium and considers what such a space could be today and in the future.

Monthly Sci-fi Scriptorium Book Clubs and Writing Groups have been taking place in Berwick since May 2025, discussing hot topics such as AI and climate change through speculative stories and science-fiction, as well as creative prompts, friendly chat and literary support.

During August 2025 the Sci-Fi Scriptorium was based at 30 Hide Hill, where different communities of readers, writers and makers were invite into the space for ticketed workshops and drop-ins to imagine Berwick’s speculative futures.

The next phase of the Sci-Fi Scriptorium will be based at Berwick Library, from Saturday 6th September until Monday 6th October.

Following her training in Printmaking and Public Art, Caroline Jupp has focused on DIY publishing, often using out-of-print books, cult novels and films as inspiration for her many participatory projects. Texts and publications are gathered together to create new archives or libraries, such as her major collaborative project with Sam Brown, Library of Unwritten Books, inspired by Beat writer, Richard Brautigan, which involved over 800 interviews with people about the book they would like to write. Jupp currently lives and works in London. Alongside her studio practice, she is also a school librarian and a film programmer for a community cinema.
