NEW Dementia Friendly Cinema Screenings at The Maltings

Mon 21 May
Monday 21 to Sunday 28 May is Dementia Awareness Week UK, and The Maltings is delighted to be showing their support by launching a new series of dementia friendly film screenings. The launch event is a showing of Gene Kelly’s legendary musical comedy Singin’ in the Rain at 2pm on Wednesday 23 May, and further monthly matinees are scheduled through to October 2018.
The first film will be screened in The Maltings’ smaller studio theatre with easy level access and a combination of raked seating as well as chairs and tables. Everyone is welcome to attend, but it’s hoped that a number of changes to the way the programme runs (road tested at other UK cinemas) will make this event accessible, relaxed and thoroughly enjoyable for people living with dementia, their friends, family and carers.  The film will start promptly at 2pm with no trailers or adverts. The volume will be slightly reduced, lights will be left on low, and customers are welcome to move around during the film if they need to. All tickets are priced at £4.50.
Films have been carefully selected for their familiarity, popularity and broad appeal. Future 2pm screenings are Some Like it Hot (20 June), Grease (20 July), The Jungle Book (10 August), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (12 September), and West Side Story (17 October).
Mathew Rooke, Maltings CEO commented : “If the initial series of 6 monthly screenings is well received, we’ll do our best to ensure they become a regular part of The Maltings programme. We’d like to create regular opportunities for families and friends to get out of the house, meet up and enjoy themselves regardless of the impact dementia may be having on their day to day routine. We’re keen to get as much feedback as we can from people who attend these trial screenings, so that we can make sure everyone’s needs are being met. And we really hope that people spread the word to anyone they think might be interested, and that they choose to come along and try it for themselves.”
