Join artist Aslı Özdoyuran for this online event discussing her recent FIRECULT artist residency.
FIRECULT is an international research project investigating how wildfires affect cultural heritage, with partners in the UK, Ireland, US, Italy and Turkey.
Aslı has been undertaking research in the Kozak Plain of Izmir, Turkey over the past 12 months with a particular focus on the resilience of the land and the community. Using narrative interviews, visual documentation, collaborative workshops and archival research, Aslı has been reflecting upon women’s local knowledge in fire disaster management within the context of forest fires that took place in nearby areas of the Kozak plain in July this year. Approaching the concept of resilience with critical attention, Aslı tracks forms and expressions of embodied knowledge, intergenerational transmission and organized resistance.
Aslı Özdoyuran is an artist living in Istanbul. Her work wanders through the territories of architecture, contextual histories and archival practices, often through the medium of sculpture. Up until its recent closure, Aslı was running BAS, a non-profit initiative in Istanbul dedicated to the collection, exhibition, production, and distribution of artists’ publications and printed matter, initiated in 2006 by Banu Cennetoğlu.
FIRECULT (Wildfire Resilient Cultural Heritage) artist residency programme is delivered by Imperial College London, Newcastle University and The Maltings (Berwick) Trust with other university partners. It has been funded by the Belmont Forum and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) in the UK.
