Berwick’s Burrell Collection

Berwick’s Burrell Collection returns to The Granary Gallery with a new exhibition which will include for the first time Degas’ ‘Russian Dancers’ alongside works by Boudin and Daubigny, watercolours by Joseph Crawhall, 17th century Ming china, Medieval carved saints and a host of other unusual and beautiful objets d’art.

These works form part of the collection of artefacts and paintings that Sir William Burrell donated to the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed in 1949.

As part of a wider project leading up to this exhibition, local volunteers have undertaken research to find out more about Burrell during his time in Berwick. Oral history research has also been undertaken with people who remember Sir William Burrell and the Berwick Museum and Art Gallery in its earlier days and the exhibition has been informed by their findings.

Teachers have also been working with the project to develop a digital learning resource enabling schools to interpret Berwick’s Burrell Collection through creative activities in the classroom before and after visiting the exhibition; these resources will be available free to schools to download and are appropriate for all ages.

A new free Berwick Burrell App is to be launched alongside the exhibition and will provide more information about artefacts that form Berwick’s Burrell Collection exhibition.
