Running from Kent and the Rhine estuary to the Norwegian coast and the tip of the Shetland islands, The North Sea has been home to warring tribes, foreign invaders, lost civilisations and holidaymakers. With a history that spans millennia, these waters contain a multitude of stories.

Alistair Moffat spent a year travelling its shores to better understand our relationship to this life-giving and destructive sea and examines how it has shaped who we are today.

"My favourite kind of travel writing: lyrical prose but also endlessly fascinating stories that reminds us of the rich and deep history of our east coast and waters beyond."
James Holland
