Turner: Northern Exposure
Turner: Northern Exposure features original works by JMW Turner, one of the most renowned of English Romantic artists and explores how the landscape of the North of England transformed him from an architectural draughtsman to a poet of the landscape sublime.
Focusing on his 1797 Northern Tour, the exhibition traces Turner’s journey as he left London and travelled up the country visiting many of the great castles and abbeys of Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland, before reaching Berwick and turning west to Cumbria and the Lakes.
The journey is illustrated by 13 colour studies on loan from the Turner bequest at Tate with further works focusing specifically on Northumberland from the V&A and Manchester Art Gallery.

Turner: Northern Exposure is a touring exhibition initiated by Berwick Visual Arts in partnership with Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery and the Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate and is supported by the Art Fund with the Weston Loan Programme.
Turner: Northern Exposure at The Granary Gallery is also supported by Northumberland County Council, Berwick Town Council, Sir James Knott Trust and the Joicey Trust.
