Main House Theatre  |  Until 26 April 2023

Ended

Young Ugyen is reluctant to complete his training as a teacher for the Bhutan government, instead dreaming of being a singer.

Compelled to complete his final year, he is packed off to the remote highlands of Bhutan to teach in an isolated village school. While the villagers are excited by the prospect, Ugyen is taken aback at such humble conditions and yearns for city life and internet contact.

This charming tale set in gorgeous scenery gives insight into a culture and Himalayan landscape rarely seen by the West. Oscar-nominated 2022.

“Dorji’s screenplay finds an ideal balance of gentle humour and life-affirming drama”
Richard Kuipers, Variety
“The decision to shoot on location using solar-powered batteries and employ the villagers as actors gives the film a refreshing sense of authenticity. The beautiful mountain landscapes and the naturalistic performances, especially from scene-stealer Pam Zam, all contribute to its ready appeal”
Allan Hunter, Screen Daily
