Join Professor Maria Chester from Berwick Educational Association for an in-depth look at the fascinating life and work of influential 20th century painter and horticulturist Cedric Morris (1889-1982), who was renowned for his portraits, flower paintings and landscapes.
Morris and his partner, Arthur Lett-Haines, founded the East Anglian School of Painting which became a hub for modernist art in Britain. The School had a radical teaching approach, very similar to the already established Black Mountain College, in the United States, based in community and collaboration.
Morris and his close connection to nature allowed him to integrate art and horticulture and he is also known for his obsession with irises which he bred extensively at his home at Benton End. His portraits caused a riot at the Guggenheim Jeune Gallery in London, in March 1938 because of his unconventional approach to form and colour while conveying individuality and personality of his sitters.
