With treachery and deceit and threat, tragedy, reunion, dance and romance – this Oscar-winning film has it all!

Sunrise was made in 1927, well before the rise of film noir in the 1940s, but the storyline was ahead of its time. A tale of a couple and their baby living a simple life in the countryside, when a ‘femme fatale’ from the city threatens their cosy domesticity. Sunrise teeters on the brink of dramatic crime, but its overall themes are loyalty and love versus the seductive dream of escape. At the first ever Academy Awards ceremony, the film won three Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Cinematography. It was directed by the German Expressionist director F.W. Murnau of Nosferatu fame, lured to Hollywood by Fox Studios.

Acclaimed silent film pianist and composer Jane Gardner has created a delightful original music score to bring to vibrant revival to the screening of Sunrise, with accompaniment from three additional multi-talented professional musicians to form a skilled quartet. The event received a standing ovation at the 2017 Berwick performance. Now it’s coming to beautiful St Cuthberts Church in nearby Norham Village! A fabulous evening of pre-film refreshments, a delightful classic movie event and foot-tapping live music.

“The poignancy and humanity of some sequences of Sunrise has never been surpassed in any movie, sound or silent."
William K. Everson, American Silent Film
“This film is precious, not least because it belongs to a lost time – it’s one of the silent era’s final hurrahs.”
Pamela Hutchinson, The Guardian
