Join a collaborative project creating a giant picture of LS Lowry on Spittal Beach!
To coincide with an exhibition taking place in the Storehouse at the Berwick Barracks to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Lowry’s death (23 February 2026), Claire Eason of Soul2Sand will be creating a large artwork on Spittal Beach, the very location that inspired Lowry’s sketches and paintings. Claire will be using the beach as a blank, natural canvas on which to make an 80ft by 20ft image of Lowry working at his easel in his signature suit, trilby hat and spectacles.
Beginning at low tide on the morning of 21st February, Claire and a team of volunteer artists equipped with garden rakes will begin to draw the image in the sand before the incoming tide washes it away. The artwork will be given a sense of permanence, as the whole endeavour will be documented by a drone filming the process overhead.
You are invited to take part in this ambitious project on Spittal Beach. In a twenty-minute session, Claire will work with you and other participants to draw an aspect of the largescale artwork in the sand using garden rakes.
Tickets are free, but booking is essential. Under 12s must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the workshop.
This physically active event will be taking place in the outdoors during February, so please wear sturdy footwear and warm, waterproof clothing you don’t mind getting a bit sandy!

Please note: This event may be postponed at short notice due to adverse weather conditions. Participants will be notified by email in case of alterations.
The Living Barracks Project is breathing new life into Berwick’s historic Barracks, restoring their place at the heart of the town’s cultural and community life. Ahead of the site’s full reopening in 2027, an inspiring programme of art, heritage and community projects is already unfolding — created with and for the people of Berwick. Together, we’re rediscovering what the Barracks have been, will be, and could become.
The Living Barracks Project is an exciting collaboration between Berwick Barracks Heritage Trust (BBHT), English Heritage, The King’s Own Scottish Borderers Association (KOSB), Maltings (Berwick) Trust and Northumberland County Council and proudly supported by The Arts Council England’s Cultural Development Fund (CDF), The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Northumberland County Council and other generous supporters.
The Cultural Development Fund is a Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) fund administered by Arts Council England.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund is the largest funder for the UK’s heritage. Using money raised by National Lottery players we support projects that connect people and communities to heritage. Our vision is for heritage to be valued, cared for and sustained for everyone, now and in the future. From historic buildings, our industrial legacy and the natural environment, to collections, traditions, stories and more. Heritage can be anything from the past that people value and want to pass on to future generations. We believe in the power of heritage to ignite the imagination, offer joy and inspiration, and to build pride in place and connection to the past.
