The Dead Don’t Hurt

Written, directed, produced, composed by and starring Viggo Mortensen, The Dead Don’t Hurt is a moving and romantic frontier Western set in 1860s Nevada.

Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread, Corsage) stars as French-Canadian Vivenne. Fiercely independent, she nevertheless falls for Danish immigrant Holger (Mortensen) and moves with him to a small Nevada town. But when the Civil War looms and when Holger leaves to fight for the Union, Vivienne faces serious threats on the home front, courtesy of the town’s corrupt mayor (Danny Huston), his rancher business partner (Garret Dillahunt) and the rancher’s violent son (Solly McLeod).

A tragic love story and a nuanced depiction of the conflict between revenge and forgiveness, with an astonishing performance from Krieps, The Dead Don’t Hurt is an impassioned portrait of a woman determined to stand up for herself in a world dominated by ruthless men.

“Love blossoms amid violence in Viggo Mortensen’s western.”
