We were able to open Oliver Hoffmeister’s exhibition ‘Hide and Seek’ at the Gymnasium on 22 May, after postponing the exhibition last year due to the pandemic. Oliver is an early career painter and printmaker based in Newcastle and James commissioned him to create a new body of work that in part responded to Berwick’s heritage and culture.

The resulting works used re-imaginings of past events in the town – from the historical to the mundane, his own visits to Berwick and research via Pathé news footage and internet algorithms to creates a history of the town that is neither fact nor fiction.

We worked with filmmaker Alan Fentiman to create digital interpretation for the exhibition.
