Maltings Cinema at Berwick Barracks

Maltings Cinema at Berwick Barracks is part of The Maltings’ year-round arts and culture programme across Berwick. This comfortable and intimate 96-seat cinema offers a relaxed place to enjoy the latest film releases, special screenings and event broadcasts together.

The cinema is housed within the historic Barracks Mob Store, dating from the early 20th century, once used to store military equipment and now reimagined as a welcoming cultural space for the town.

Opening times

The cinema opens 45 minutes before the start of each screening or event, giving you time to arrive, settle in and enjoy the space before the film begins.

By train
Berwick-upon-Tweed station is on the East Coast Main Line, with regular services between Edinburgh and Newcastle. The Barracks are a short walk from the station.

By bus
Local services from across North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders stop in Berwick. The nearest bus stops are Golden Square and Chapel Street.

By car
Follow signs from the A1 to Berwick-upon-Tweed and the town centre. Berwick Barracks is signposted from Parade.

Parking

A public car park with 78 spaces is available a short walk from the cinema on Parade. Please note there is a three-hour time limit, and a parking disc must be displayed.

The Ravensdowne entrance is reserved for accessible parking and drop-off for visitors with additional access requirements. All other visitors should use the main Barracks entrance on Parade, in line with venue access arrangements.

Maltings at The Granary Gallery

Dewar’s Lane, Berwick-upon-Tweed, TD15 1HJ

The Granary Gallery is part of The Maltings’ year-round arts and culture programme across Berwick. The gallery presents a changing programme of exhibitions throughout the year, with a focus on modern British art and artists inspired by Northumberland and the Scottish Borders.

Previous exhibitions have included Scottish Colourists from The Fleming Collection, Turner: Northern Exposure, The Glasgow Boys & Girls and L.S. Lowry in Berwick & Northumberland, bringing nationally significant work to local audiences alongside contemporary perspectives.

Originally known as Dewar’s Lane Granary, the building dates from 1769 and sits within the network of narrow streets and alleyways inside Berwick’s Elizabethan Quay Walls. After being damaged by fire in 1815, it continued in use as a working granary until 1985 before falling into disrepair. The building was later refurbished by Berwick-upon-Tweed Preservation Trust and reopened in 2010, now home to the youth hostel, bistro, meeting spaces and the Granary Gallery.

Opening times

The Granary Gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am–4pm. Opening times may vary during exhibition changeovers, so please check individual exhibition listings before visiting.

Getting Here

On foot
From Eastern Lane, follow the road down to Bridge Street and turn left towards Dewar’s Lane. The gallery can be accessed through the YHA entrance from the car park, with the gallery located on the second floor. There is also an entrance directly from the Quay Walls.

By train

Maltings at Hide Hill

Maltings at Hide Hill is a cosy creative space in the heart of Berwick, opened in December 2025 as part of The Maltings’ year-round arts and culture programme across the town. The space hosts workshops, creative learning activity, small-scale events and community-led projects, offering a welcoming place to take part, learn new skills and spend time being creative together.

Hide Hill provides a flexible space for artists, participants and community groups to come together, supporting The Maltings’ work with children, young people and local communities through artist-led activity and engagement.

Maltings at The Gymnasium Gallery

The Gymnasium Gallery is part of The Maltings’ visual arts programme and will reopen in 2027 following refurbishment, marking an important new chapter for arts and culture in Berwick.

When complete, the gallery will provide an expanded space for exhibitions, artist commissions and creative activity, building on The Maltings’ commitment to bringing ambitious visual art to the town and creating opportunities for artists and audiences to connect. Together with the wider exhibition programme, the Gymnasium will help strengthen Berwick’s reputation as a place where art, creativity and community come together.

As work progresses, we’ll be sharing updates and opportunities to get involved as the space takes shape ahead of reopening.

Maltings at Eastern Lane

The Maltings at Eastern Lane is currently closed as it undergoes a major redevelopment, with the transformed venue due to reopen in 2028.

This multi-million-pound project will create a new home for The Maltings’ performance and cultural programme, designed to support artists, audiences and communities for generations to come. The redevelopment represents a significant moment for Berwick, strengthening the town’s cultural life and creating new opportunities to experience theatre, music, film and creative activity together.

The project is funded through the Borderlands Regional Growth Deal and Northumberland County Council, reflecting a shared investment in the future of culture and creativity in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

We’ll continue to share updates as the redevelopment progresses and look forward to welcoming audiences back to Eastern Lane as part of the next chapter for The Maltings.
