Lucia Nogueira (1950–1998) was a Brazilian artist specialising in sculptures and installations, video works and drawings.

Her work often alluded to the body and was concerned with the relationship between objects and language.

Nogueira drew obsessively throughout her career, not always as preparatory sketches for sculptures, but as unique and strange explorations into a surreal world, and these are explored in detail in the exhibition.

Also exhibited is Nogueira’s film Smoke, which can be viewed as a drawing itself and is based on a site-specific performance work presented for the Berwick Ramparts Project in 1996. The film explores the transitions between sea and sky, sky and land, night and day, the town’s ramparts, and Berwick as the ultimate border town.
